How Tesla’s ‘Bioweapon Defense Mode’ is helping the ones affected by CA wildfires

California is going through the worst wildfires of its history, let’s see how Tesla Model S and Model X‘s ‘Bioweapon Defense Mode’ can help in this situation.

Firstly we should mention that Elon Musk has allowed Tesla employees to go help the affected CA residents if they can and shouldn’t worry about the payment. This should be an example for the Corporate World in helping humanity in tough times.

Elon Musk further took to Twitter and said:

So how does Tesla’s ‘Bioweapon Defense Mode’ or filtration system works many folds better than a conventional car’s air-filtration? Because Tesla Mode X and Model S have a 10X larger primary air-filter than a traditional car and has secondary air-filter still larger than a typical car’s primary filter.

In addition to particle filters Tesla vehicles have three additional layers of activated carbon that block the following gasses

• Universal Absorbent (Hydrocarbons)
• Acidic Gases (Sulfur)
• Alkaline Gases (Ammonia)

The net effect of the above three layers and the whole air-filtration system setup is that a Model S and Model X air-cleanliness levels which are comparable to a hospital’s operating room.

According to Tesla their Model S and X’s air-filtration system is working at it’s worst it can provide you with up to 800 times better protection than Bacteria, Allergens, Soot/Smog and Viruses (look at the chart below).

Tesla’s ‘Bioweapon Defense Mode’ was initially criticized for being an over-kill or simply an over-statement by Elon Musk, but time has proven that this feature is proving to be handy in fleeing or rescuing the affected in worst climatic situations.

Andrei B posted the real-world air quality monitoring tests in the Bay Area with his Tesla Model X — with windows up and window down the results of the tests show a significant safety against the air pollution currently poisoning California’s environment (photos below by Andrei B/Twitter).

Elon Musk claims that Tesla Model S and Model X are actually capable of saving their occupants in a military-grade bio-weapon attack and is not just a marketing gimmick. Also, electric vehicles are less likely to catch fire in the absence of a gasoline tank and engine in such situations as the current CA wildfires.

A family is seen fleeing the California wildfires in their car and according to the latest reports they have reached a safe destination.

In response to a question that Model 3 air-filtration was as good as the Model S and Model X, Elon Musk said:

Good, but not hospital grade. S & X were designed to be proof against an actual bioweapon attack. Requires a giant filter with separate acid & alkaline gas neutralization layers. Not enough room in Model 3.

Still, Tesla Model 3‘s air-filtration system is only second to none other than the Model S and Model X‘s Bioweapon Defense Mode.
