Tesla Model 3: A rising superstar in Norway, surpasses Model X all time registrations

Tesla Model 3 is quickly rising as the dominator in the electric vehicle scene of Norway, just a few days ago it surpassed the number of registrations of its older sibling, the Tesla Model X which has been selling in the country since 2016.

In just less than 8 months of sales in Norway, Tesla Model 3 is absolutely crushing the competition with sales figures blasting through the roof.

Tesla (TSLA) has accumulated 13,160 Model 3 registrations year to date (YTD), the closest competitors are the Volkswagen e-Golf (7,667 registrations) Nissan Leaf (6,261 bookings) — the only reason these two cars are topping the chart are the ‘all-time’ registration numbers, it has been years since both of these cars are available in the Norwegian market.

Elbilstatistikk.no (Elbil = Electric Vehicle in Norwegian) gathers and releases data on daily electric vehicle registration numbers in Norway, as we can see in the statistics table above, Tesla Model 3 has both topped the numbers for this year and last month as well, it is just a matter of time when it outperforms the Kia Soul, BMW i3 and its elder sibling Tesla Model S.

With average 1,645 Model 3 registrations per month since it’s launch in Europe earlier this year, it will only take next 3 months to defeat Kia Soul in all-time sales and only 5 months to beat the Model S which has been sold in the country since 2013.

Now let’s look at some historical data graphs specific to Tesla vehicle registration numbers in Norway.

It was a rough ride for Tesla before the launch of the Model 3 in Norway, as we can see in the above graph, sometimes the registrations we as high as 2,461 vehicles to as low as only 70 a month (Model S and Model X combined).

The Tesla sales pattern in this era was almost unpredictable as Tesla registered 2,461 Model S and X in  Dec ’17 and it plunged down to less than 10% in Jan ’18 with only 220 registrations, and the numbers again picked up in Mar ’18 for a few months.

Total number of Tesla vehicles registered from Sep ’17 to Sep ’18 = 12,130.

Let’s look at the graph when the Tesla Model 3 enters the EV scene of Norway, what happens with the Tesla sales/registration numbers.

Yes, that bump in Tesla registrations in Mar ’19 came just after almost 15 days when the first ship loaded with Tesla Model 3s reached the Port of Zeebrugge, Belgium, after the Tesla sales/registrations pattern is becoming much more predictable after that.

Total number of Tesla vehicles registered from Sep ’18 to Sep ’19 = 18567

The Tesla Model 3 factor impacted a +53% growth for the same 13 month period year-over-year and we still have 5 days left in the current month, with Tesla Model Y also expected to hit the Europe/Norway by 2021, Tesla will have further grip over the EV market in the region and a shrinking ICE demand will be much more discernible.

In the foreseeable future, Norway seems to be on the correct path of incentivizing its citizens for electric vehicle adoption and this will facilitate further growth and dominancy of Tesla in the country.
